Kid's Art Auction Projects

Check out this years collaborative art projects from the kids at North Beach Elementary for the Spring Fling fund raiser! On display all month at Cafe Fiore's  5405 Leary Ave. location ( in downtown Ballard).

The 3rd graders start by collaging newspaper buildings onto a sky blue background, then  layers of transparent tinted acrylic paints were added.

It has been a busy 2 months. Studio kids was happy to be involved again this year coordinating and executing most of the projects. I'll be posting more photos next week.Thanks a bunch to all the teachers and parent volunteers for all your help. It could not happen without you!

Spring Classes

At Studio-kids our class sizes are small to allow plenty of time for individual attention.

Here's few shots from my daughter's "Art Party" in the studio a couple of weeks ago.

Inspiration from the Childrens Painting Class

Here's a few shots of my own work. I have been totally inspired by the kids still life paintings! 

A single sweet Clementine.

The first 3 paintings are acrylics on 5"x5" blocks of wood .  The pepper is acrylic on paper, measuring 4"x6". The 3 clementines are  acrylic on a 4"X9" canvas .

Introduction to Painting with Acrylics

During this 3 session class we learned about complimentary colors.

In the first session we explored both watercolor and acrylic paints. We worked quickly so that the colors could mix and blend while they were still wet.

These paintings are all acrylics on small blocks of wood, approximately 5"X5." We painted very quickly; I love the gestural quality the students achieved in their paintings.

Ananya (6) loves Kiwi, so she was thrilled to have them model for her.

We started by first doing a quick sketch of the subject, kiwi's, limes or clementines today.

Since we were focusing on just one object, I wanted to make sure the kids made it pretty big. Then straight into the paint.

Subject first, background second, stem third, shadow fourth and then more paint and details on the subject.

A nice use of complimentary colours in this painting of a lime by John(10).

Other rules off my thumb: try not to use the default color straight out of the tube, let your brush strokes show on the painting, use more paint then you think you should,  and whatever you do, never, ever, ever ever paint with brown. Happy painting everyone!

Life Drawing with Chickens

One of my favorite memories of art school was the first week, just after summer break. The Concourse Gallery at Emily Carr University was transformed to resemble a barn. Bales of hay and live critters were brought in as models and all drawing classes took place there. My favorite models were always the chickens.

So, I'm excited to announce, we've added chickens to the backyard at Studio-Kids. We have 5 beautiful girls practicing their poise and stomp, just waiting to be life drawing models! The January drawing class is now enrolling, class size is limited so register soon.
